AWS launches stablecoin payments for AI agents with Coinbase and Stripe

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the launch of Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Payments, a new infrastructure that enables autonomous AI agents to make real-time online purchases using stablecoins. The system is built in partnership with Coinbase, using its x402 protocol, and Stripe, via its Privy wallet. The first version focuses on stablecoin micropayments for APIs, data feeds, paywalled content, and other digital services, with plans to expand to larger transactions such as hotel bookings, travel reservations, and merchant payments in future iterations. This rollout is part of a broader push toward an "agentic economy" where AI agents act as independent economic actors. AWS describes the platform as protocol-agnostic, with x402 being the first supported standard. Early testing includes companies like Warner Bros. Discovery, which sees potential for agent-driven transactions involving premium content such as live sports and major entertainment releases. Industry leaders including Coinbase founder Brian Armstrong, Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, and Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson have predicted that soon most internet activity will be conducted by AI agents. For wallet and key holders, this development signals the growing need for secure private key management as stablecoin-linked AI agents become more prevalent. Users must ensure their wallet infrastructure supports automated transactions and that keys are protected against unauthorized agent spending. The integration of stablecoins into AI commerce may also increase demand for hardware wallets and multi-signature setups to manage agent-specific permissions. As the ecosystem evolves, wallet providers may need to offer dedicated agent accounts with spending limits and audit trails to prevent misuse or theft.
