YouTube Makes AI Labels More Prominent, Auto-Detects AI-Generated Videos

YouTube announced on Wednesday it will make labels for AI-generated or meaningfully altered videos more prominent. Labels on long-form videos will appear below the player, and on Shorts as overlays. The platform will also automatically detect and label AI-generated content even if creators do not disclose AI use. Creators can dispute incorrect labels via YouTube Studio, but disclosures remain permanent for videos made with YouTube AI tools or containing AI metadata. These changes coincide with Google's expansion of AI tools at Google I/O 2026, including Gemini Omni, which enables video creation and editing using text, images, audio, and footage. New AI features for Shorts allow restyling, inserting oneself into clips, and remixing other creators' content. YouTube states the goal is to balance transparency with creator control, and the labels do not affect recommendations or monetization.
