US House Panel to Review Crypto Tax Proposals in Public Hearing
The House Ways and Means Committee will hold a hearing on Tuesday at 2pm ET to discuss a package of crypto tax proposals. Witnesses include officials from Fidelity, Coinbase, Coin Center, and NYU Law. The proposals, released last week by Republicans, include tax relief for staking and mining rewards, a $10 exemption for network fees on up to 5,000 transactions per year, and a two-year safe harbor for unreported prior gains. The hearing aims to address long-standing disputes over when crypto rewards and small transactions become taxable. Markus Levin of XYO noted that staking and mining rewards have been in a grey area, making compliance a guessing game. Dan Dadybayo of Horizontal Systems expects a constructive, business-focused discussion on making rules workable, but does not anticipate revisiting the 1% remittance transfer tax.
