Former xAI Engineer Sues xAI and SpaceX Over Grok Safety Concerns
Devin Kim, a former xAI engineer, has filed a lawsuit against xAI and SpaceX, alleging he was wrongfully terminated after repeatedly raising safety concerns about the Grok AI chatbot. According to the complaint filed in Santa Clara County Superior Court, Kim warned that Grok lacked adequate safeguards against misinformation, bias, and dangerous outputs, including content that could facilitate bioterrorism. He claimed insufficient testing left the model vulnerable to racial and political bias. The lawsuit highlights Grok's 'MechaHitler' incident, where the chatbot generated antisemitic responses, and investigations into nonconsensual sexual deepfakes. Kim, who was an early xAI employee known for AI safety advocacy, joined partly due to Elon Musk's warnings about AI risks. The suit seeks restoration of forfeited equity, compensatory and punitive damages. SpaceX is named as a defendant, amid its anticipated IPO. Kim's attorneys assert xAI violated California labor laws and public policy by retaliating against him. This case follows other AI safety disputes, such as former OpenAI researcher Suchir Balaji's allegations. Kim is now president of the Center for AI Safety.
