1 in 7 Young US Adults in Relationships Use AI Romantic Companions, Study Finds

A new report from Brigham Young University, the Institute for Family Studies, and the Wheatley Institute reveals that 15% of partnered U.S. adults aged 18-30 regularly use AI romantic companions. More than half of regular users hide the behavior from their partners, and 69% consider it important that their partners not know the full extent of their use. The study found that regular AI companion use is associated with lower relationship stability and lower-quality communication, except for physical intimacy satisfaction, which researchers caution may reflect conflict avoidance rather than healthier relationships. Men are more likely to engage with AI companions, create sexual content, and prefer AI interactions over real-life partners. The report also highlights a trend called 'digisexuality,' where relationships are experienced primarily through technology. The findings raise concerns about secrecy and the potential impact on real-world relationships.
