US states Tennessee and Georgia enforce new crypto ATM restrictions

Cryptocurrency ATMs are rapidly disappearing across the US as new state laws take effect. On July 1, Tennessee imposed a complete ban on crypto ATMs and kiosks, while Georgia enacted transaction limits, customer warnings, and refund requirements for fraud victims. These actions follow bans in Indiana (March) and Minnesota (effective Aug. 1). The crackdown stems from rising concerns about scams targeting seniors, who are often tricked into sending funds via these machines. Delaware and New Jersey are considering similar bans. The regulatory pressure has already contributed to Bitcoin Depot's Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May. According to restructuring adviser Roshan Dharia, the traditional ATM business model—relying on high spreads and low scrutiny—is collapsing under new consumer protection standards that compress fees and increase operator liability. Additionally, Canada has proposed a nationwide crypto ATM ban, citing the machines as a primary tool for scammers and money launderers.
