Ukraine to Convert Seized Crypto into War Bonds

Ukraine plans to convert over $8.3 million in cryptocurrency, seized from an international cybercrime group, into government war bonds to support its wartime economy. The Asset Recovery and Management Agency (ARMA) said this is the first time seized digital assets have been placed under its management. The cryptocurrency was obtained during an investigation into an international hacking group accused of cyberattacks in Europe and the US. The group allegedly stole sensitive information, extorted victims via ransomware, and laundered proceeds in Ukraine by purchasing real estate and vehicles. Four suspects, including the alleged organizer, have been detained. Authorities seized over $11.1 million in total assets, including $8.3 million in crypto and $1 million in cash. Investigators estimate the group caused over $100 million in losses. Once converted to traditional currency, the proceeds will fund war bonds, which are government securities issued to finance public spending, including defense, during the ongoing war with Russia. ARMA emphasized the need for the state to effectively manage digital assets as criminals use them to conceal illicit proceeds.
