UK FCA Warns Premier League Clubs Over Crypto Sponsorship Risks

The UK Financial Conduct Authority has sent letters to Premier League clubs warning that sponsorship deals with unauthorized crypto and trading platforms may breach financial services laws and put fans at risk. FCA Head of Department Fiona Mackinnon-Miller noted an increase in partnerships with unauthorized firms, some operating unlawfully, exposing clubs to legal, operational, and reputational risks. Director Lucy Castledine emphasized that sponsorship visibility does not indicate regulatory approval, urging fans to use the Firm Checker tool. Sports Minister Stephanie Peacock backed the FCA, stating fans deserve safe partner companies. This regulatory scrutiny comes as commercial revenue surpasses broadcasting as primary income for top clubs, with Manchester City generating $475 million in commercial revenue in 2025. The FCA is coordinating with the government, Premier League, and the new Independent Football Regulator to address unauthorized marketing across professional football. UK authorities have previously warned against fan tokens in 2023 and cracked down on unlicensed crypto activities.
