Solana's Alpenglow Upgrade Enters Community Testing Phase

Alpenglow, a protocol upgrade designed to significantly accelerate Solana's layer-1 network, has entered a community validator testing phase, according to an announcement by Anza, the Solana research and development firm, on Monday. The upgrade aims to replace the existing towerBFT consensus mechanism with a new system that could reduce time to finality by about 100x, making network speeds comparable to centralized financial infrastructure. The community test cluster allows external validator operators to test the upgrade for the first time, previously limited to internal node clusters. Anza Lead Economist Max Resnick noted that initial tests showed a smooth migration and a dramatic reduction in finality time. The upgrade was approved by validators in September 2024 with 98% support via Solana Improvement Proposal SIMD-0236. If testing on testnet proceeds smoothly, mainnet activation could occur in late Q3 or early Q4 2025. Analysts have suggested that Alpenglow could help propel SOL's price back to $250 by year-end 2025, though the token currently trades around $97.45, down nearly 67% from its January 2025 all-time high.
