Base Network Stalls Twice Delay B20 Token Launch; Sequencer Risk Revived

Base's B20 token standard, built into the network's Beryl upgrade, was scheduled to open for issuers on June 26, but a second chain stall in two days caused the launch to be delayed. Beryl, completed June 25, introduced faster withdrawals, lighter node software, and the B20 standard. However, B20 issuance depends on an activation registry that Base has not yet enabled. On June 26, hours before B20's planned activation, Base block production turned unhealthy, echoing a previous halt that day. The first stall on June 25 resulted from an invalid block at height 47,806,542, freezing the sequencer for nearly two hours. Recovery both times required ecosystem node operators to restart. User funds remained safe as they settle on Ethereum, but the failures revived concerns about Base's single sequencer, run by Coinbase, which has not been decentralized. Base achieved Stage 1 decentralization in 2025 with fault proofs and a security council, but these did not prevent sequencer stalls. The network had nearly two years without a halt until an August 2025 outage first raised centralization issues. Base, the largest Ethereum Layer 2 with about $4 billion in deposits, now faces questions about its stability. The B20 standard, similar to ERC-20, offers built-in supply caps, roles, and transfer policies for stablecoins and real-world assets. Base documentation had anticipated B20 issuance on June 26, but the activation registry remains offline. Base stated it is delaying the registry enablement to ensure a smooth rollout, with Sepolia and Vibenet timelines unchanged. The Beryl upgrade also shortened canonical withdrawals from seven days to five. A full post-mortem on the consensus bug behind the halts is promised, and whether Base enables B20 before fixing the stalls will test its scaling roadmap for institutional issuers.

Key facts

  • Base network stalled twice on June 25-26, delaying B20 token standard launch.
  • First halt caused by an invalid block; second by similar symptoms, both requiring node restarts.
  • User funds unaffected, but sequencer centralization risk highlighted again.
  • B20 standard offers built-in features for stablecoin and real-world asset issuers.
  • Base promised a post-mortem on the consensus bug; B20 activation registry remains offline.
